Suzume no Tojimari || Quick Review

Suzume, a 17-year-old girl, meets Souta, a young man looking for a door. Out of curiosity, she sought out the mysterious door and discovers that it opens to a different world, only to welcome disaster and destruction in hers. Now she embarks on a journey to help Souta to close the doors all over Japan in order to save everyone.  Makoto Shinkai and RADWIMPS really know how to use music in creating the world and emotions of the story. With Japanese mythology and historical elements, they get to tell a common message differently that in the end leaves you emotional. Cinematography and animation are just beautiful yet intentional. (Wish I can say more about this but I might spoil)  And dammit, I have nothing to say about the voice actors because I have a soft spot for Japanese VAs.  Although, I kinda wish that there was more emphasis on Suzume’s feelings and thoughts about her past. There are scenes that do but they didn’t express enough for me to make the ending more im...

Movie Review: 'Weathering With You'

Weathering With You (Tenki no Ko) is about Hodaka, a 16-year-old runaway, trying to find his place in the world, who meets a girl named Hina, who turns out to have an ability to control the weather.

This was directed by none other than the Kimi no na wa (Your Name) director, Makoto Shinkai, and it was an echo to it, like a literal echo. You'll be surprised. You'll know what I mean once you watch it. It'll make your fan heart bubble (and perhaps shed a few tears.)

Despite they're teenage characters, Hodaka and Hina's story was relatable. With Hodaka as a runaway and Hina taking care of her little brother after the loss of their mum, they were facing the real world at such a young age, without anyone helping them in dealing with what we call "adulthood" like budgeting, finding a job, etc.

In the midst of that, they were finding their purpose.

It's when their worlds crash that changed everything. With a mix of fantasy, the story takes us to a journey of finding one's purpose, the sacrifices we make to get there but only to lead us to something close to home.

'With each other, rainy days aren't so bad.'

But as you approach the climax of the film, its impact is not as close as to what Your Name gives you. I couldn't help but compare the two. But I guess if I didn't watch Kimi no na wa, the film would have the whole effect on me that it was aiming for, or maybe not. So-so.

Thanks to SM Cinema for the Exclusive Fan screening of Weathering With You. It will be showing in Philippine cinemas on August 28, 2019.
