Suzume no Tojimari || Quick Review

Suzume, a 17-year-old girl, meets Souta, a young man looking for a door. Out of curiosity, she sought out the mysterious door and discovers that it opens to a different world, only to welcome disaster and destruction in hers. Now she embarks on a journey to help Souta to close the doors all over Japan in order to save everyone.  Makoto Shinkai and RADWIMPS really know how to use music in creating the world and emotions of the story. With Japanese mythology and historical elements, they get to tell a common message differently that in the end leaves you emotional. Cinematography and animation are just beautiful yet intentional. (Wish I can say more about this but I might spoil)  And dammit, I have nothing to say about the voice actors because I have a soft spot for Japanese VAs.  Although, I kinda wish that there was more emphasis on Suzume’s feelings and thoughts about her past. There are scenes that do but they didn’t express enough for me to make the ending more im...

The Girl From Nowhere (Netflix Series)

If you love the thrill of Thai movies, then this series is the one for you, but with weird, creepy twists. You’ve been warned.

The Girl from Nowhere is a collection of one-hour Thai stories of Nanno discovering and exposing the dark secrets of schools, teachers, and students. In every episode, she’s the new girl in school. There’s no telling if there’s a linear timeline amongst the episodes (though the last episode has expressed a connection). If there is a linear timeline, then students would have had talks about Nanno. One thing’s for sure, the story always leads to the exposure of a secret or karma being a bitch and would bite you in the back.

Each episode is directed by different directors, and obviously, you’ll notice it when each episode is treated differently. They go from being realistic to the supernatural.

Nanno is an interesting character. As what my friend would say, she’s the opposite of a Manic Pixie Dream Girl. He thinks that she must be a Buddhist goddess seeking retribution for all the evils in the world. She plays as if some sort of subconscious being in our own heads; the character that puts the cards in the table, that shows the good and the bad, that serves justice and punishment to those that deserve it. She mostly shows the bad side of everyone, that eventually brings up the consequences.

Like in the first episode. Behind a too-good-to-be-true school, there’s a teacher who secretly has sex with his female students through after-school activities. Nanno, in her own smart, sinister way, was able to reveal the dirty secrets, and brought justice.

But with the different styles and stories, there are some that leave me unsatisfied. They don’t give me the same thrill that the others do have. It gives this inconsistent feel that The Girl From Nowhere is supposed to give from the beginning. This is just my own opinion, but if you have finished watching The Girl From Nowhere, please leave a comment below on your take on the series.

Also, what are your favorite episodes? Here’s mine:

Episode 1: Ugly Truth

Episode 3: Trophy

Episode 5: Social Love

After picking these episodes, I realize that perhaps whatever are your favorite episodes, there must be a part of you that makes you relate to it, that you know you have experienced them.

Hope you enjoy the series. Again, let me know your take on the Netflix series.
